New Google Analytics SDK for iOS supports custom variables

Google Analytics logoGoogle has recently released version 1.1 of its Analytics SDK for iOS. The main addition to this release is support for custom variables, which has been available in Analytics for Android since December of last year.

Custom variables allow you to segment your users and they can provide very useful context. Examples include finding out what percentage of users prefer a paid app vs. an ad-supported free app. In this scenario, you can find out which of the apps you're making more money on -- the free one or the paid one. You can also find out how many installs your app got by version, which version is the most popular, which is the least popular, and how fast your users are upgrading. You can also easily learn whether the users of your app prefer to use it in portrait or landscape mode.

These are just some examples, of course, as custom variables can lead you to many more useful answers about your app's users and their usage patterns. For even more examples of such use cases, here's a blog post by Alex Lucas intended for the Android SDK -- naturally, all the things listed in there will work on iOS as well.
