Fantastic Fargo and Great Grand Forks!

North Dakota.jpg
What a great day. Started with bang in Fargo at Babb's Coffee shop, then a quick drive to Grand Forks for a talk with a very engaged group of prospective entrepreneurs at the Ina Mae center; topped off by a truly wonderful town hall in downtown Grand Forks at the Coffee Company. Sarah and her crew were wonderful - completely rearranging every piece of furniture in the room to accommodate a big crowd - even more people showed up than had RSVP'd. A serious group of power users. Two gents had driven 2.5 hours from Canada! We even borrowed chairs from the fitness club and the women's hair salon next door! One of the many great advantages of hosting these in smaller towns and special thanks to the 94.7FM DJs who knew the proprietors and helped us with the chairs - fortunately they were Pandora fans :)

We also just ran way over on our RSVPs for Omaha on Thursday, so we've moving the event to the Durham Museum (801 South 10th Street).

Gotta get some sleep for the long drive to Sioux Falls tomorrow.

This is fun!

Number of Americans Without Health Insurance Rises to 50.7 Million

When you hear that the number of people without health insurance in the United States rose by a record 8.6 percent to 50.7 million, it makes you wonder why there was so much resistance to health care reform.

The percentage of Americans without health insurance jumped to 16.7 percent from 15.4 percent over the last year, the Census Bureau reports. Of course, the large number of people who have lost their jobs over the last year is part of the problem. But a study from the Kaiser Family Foundation found that the cost of health care is quickly rising. Employees now pay 47 percent more for coverage now than they did in 2005 while employers are seeing increases of 20 percent.

The new health care legislation signed into effect by President Barack Obama will eventually provide coverage to another 32 million people. However, many of the provisions in the law do not take effect until 2014.

"If ever one needed an affirmation about how essential the Affordable Care Act is, this is that affirmation," Ron Pollack, executive director of the health consumers group Families USA told USA Today. "The clear message for people now is that help will be on the way."

The question is will it be fast enough? Instead of talking about repealing health care reform, incoming Republicans should be looking at ways to strengthen the bill.

Simply put, these numbers are frightening. Of course, African Americans are affected more by the lack of health insurance. The United States can no longer sweep this problem under the rug. The wealthiest country in the history of the world must find a way to get people access to what is universally acknowledged as a human right.

And contrary to the wide spread belief that those with health insurance aren't working hard enough, 75 percent of those 50 million people have jobs.

It signifies a shift in American society. The Huffington Post writes:

The study underscores the degree to which the recession has accelerated the loss of basic elements once viewed as inextricable pieces of a middle class life. The number of Americans lacking medical coverage now exceeds the population of Spain.

But the only reason this is allowed to persist is that we let it. Americans have fallen for the false rhetoric being bandied about regarding the need for health care reform: We are heading toward a socialist society; Death panels will decide whether the elderly can live or die.

This death panel issue came up again recently as Medicare regulations go into effect that will pay doctors to counsel patients about end of life planning. This is something that will help people plan in advance what they want to happen in emergency situations. It will also help cut down on medical waste. The New York Times reports:

The administration also cited research by Dr. Stacy M. Fischer, an assistant professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, who found that "end-of-life discussions between doctor and patient help ensure that one gets the care one wants." In this sense, Dr. Fischer said, such consultations "protect patient autonomy."

That's right. Far from the government controlling your life, patients are given the power to individually decide, with the proper information, what they want to happen during a time we all must face. That sounds like freedom, not government control.

So, wake up Americans. Do the research and decide for yourself. Get in touch with your compassion. With 50.7 million people, one in six, without health insurance, some of them have to be your friends and families. Seventy-five percent of those who are not covered have jobs. Don't think it can't happen to you one day.

Losing Well

Mike Konczal says two of his biggest disappointments of 2009-10 have been Congress's failure to enact a carbon policy and Obama's continuation (and in some cases, expansion) of Bush-era civil liberties policies. No argument there. But his other big disappointment is that he thinks Obama never learned to lose well:

By losing well, I mean losing in a way that builds a coalition, demonstrates to your allies that you are serious, takes a pound of flesh from your opponents and leaves them with the blame, and convinces those on the fence that it is an important issue for which you have the answers. Lose for the long run; lose in a way that leaves liberal institutions and infrastructure stronger, able to be deployed again at a later date.

[Example: ramping up deportation of illegal immigrants and then failing to get Republican support for the DREAM Act anyway.]

This is losing poorly. It makes major concessions without getting anything in return, conceding both pieces of flesh and the larger narrative to the other side....This is true of many issues, ranging from unions fighting for the ability to unionize easier to the technology groups fighting for Net Neutrality. Why should these groups be happier with the past two years, even if they thought on day one that they wouldn’t win anything? How are either stronger for the next battle?

This has indeed been a mystery. It's never been clear whether Obama makes these pre-emptive concessions because he genuinely believes they're good policy or because he genuinely thinks it will draw out Republican support down the road. Neither really seems to make sense. Even if he thinks they're good policy, it's still smarter to hold them back as bargaining chips for broader policy victories. And quite plainly they did nothing to endear him to Republicans, who are almost unanimously convinced that he spent the last two years ramming an ultra-liberal policy agenda down their throats using a combination of bald lies and Chicago-style thuggery. It's hard to believe that Obama ever thought they'd react differently.

In any case, I find this aspect of Obama's presidency perplexing too. Compromise is one thing: it's baked into the cake of mainstream American politics. But I expected that even as he inevitably compromised, Obama, with his famously long view of things, would steadily try to push the public in a more liberal direction. As Mike says, this may mean eventually compromising on a policy that appeals to the broad middle of the country, but doing it in a way that hurts your opponents and energizes your friends for battles to come. Obama seems to have done exactly the opposite. It's hard to understand.

The Vice President underscored the United States' commitment to an on-time referendum and emphasized the importance of Sudanese commitment to finding a negotiated path forward on critical outstanding Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) and post-referendum issues. Mayor Cory Booker Uses Twitter to Help Clear Newark Streets

Filed under:

Cory Booker has added social media to his arsenal of snowplows as the active Newark, N.J., mayor helps get his city dug out from several feet of snow from this week's storm.

Booker is using Twitter to communicate directly with residents to help get roads cleared and people who are stuck in the snow some assistance.

"I ... have a great Twitter feed, residents who are letting me know what's happening, letting me know if they need help," Booker said Tuesday evening.
"We've gotten diapers to people. Delivered food," he said. "One pregnant woman who was going into labor -- at least thought she was. We were able to get there before the ambulances could. We actually got an ambulance unstuck."

One resident posted a photo on Twitter of a city crew clearing a roadway, and thanked the mayor. "You are so welcome!" tweeted Booker. Booker has used Twitter during emergency situations before, Brenna Ehrlich noted on Mashable, a social-media-focused blog, which is a CNN Tech partner.

"Maybe there's a lesson in snowflakes," Booker said from the middle of a snow-packed street. "Individually we're a little weak, but when we stick together there's a lot of strength there."

DataMan tracks your data usage, sends alerts for data caps

dataman app reviewUnless you're on the AT&T unlimited data plan, you may be sweating those data caps on your iPhone. If you go over a certain amount of data usage on your iOS device, you'll wind up with overages. Couple that with the fact that our iDevices appear to upload info in the wee hours of the night and consumers wind up wondering just how much data they are using on a daily basis. Yes, you can drill down into Settings > General > Usage to see your data, or use the AT&T myWireless app, but those are slightly inconvenient and don't provide alerts or detailed info. Enter DataMan, which features data tracking and push notifications to let you know when you're getting close or going over your data plan allowances. Does it work? Absolutely. I tested the app for a few weeks and found it quite simple to use.

Upcoming Town Halls in Denver and Atlanta

Hey all -

We're having Pandora town-halls in Denver and Atlanta next week. If you're in one of those cities and haven't gotten your email invite, send a note to 'tour@pandora.com' and we'll put you on the list.

Town halls are a big part of what Pandora is about. They continue to be wonderful opportunities for us meet and communicate directly with listeners.

We love feedback and people at Pandora events often weigh in on how Pandora should look in the future. In addition, I talk a bit about some company history, as well as a look under the hood of the music genome, and our latest thinking about the future. The questions and discussions always cover a wide range of topics - from how the music genome project works, to licensing, to the latest device updates. Everything is fair game!

So if you're in Denver or Atlanta next week I hope you'll come and hang and chat for an hour and a bit, that's usually how long the town halls last. And if you're in another city and think it is time we had a town hall there, let us know by emailing 'tour@pandora.com,' and we'll add it to the list!

Details below about Denver and Atlanta. See you soon!

MacBook Pro appears on Amazon's 2010 bestseller list

The iPhone and the iPad both made eBay's "top-shopped" list for the year, but neither of those devices are sold on Amazon, so they weren't to be found on the big online retailer's annual list of bestselling items. The Kindle was, of course -- it's Amazon's own e-reader, and it was both the bestselling and most wished-for item on the site in the Electronics category.

But while Apple's iOS devices didn't make the list, there was one major Apple item that did. In the Computers category, the MacBook Pro with the 13.3" screen scored as both the bestselling and most wished-for item. Apple's excellent laptop appears to be the computer of choice for Amazon shoppers. The only other specifically Mac item on the list was the Mac/Windows version of Photoshop, which was the most gifted item in the software category (Microsoft Office was the bestselling item in that category).

One smartphone did make the bestselling list, and it was the Samsung Captivate Android phone (again, probably only because the iPhone isn't for sale on Amazon.com). Some of the other items on the list are funny, too -- who knew so many people needed Donut Shop K-Cups? For work coffee, you think?

Teena Marie obituary

American soul and funk musician who was one of the few successful white performers of R&B

Although many have tried, very few white singers have master- ed the art of singing black American music and few have signed to Berry Gordy's popular Motown label. One who succeeded was the R&B, soul and funk artist Teena Marie, who has died unexpectedly aged 54.

She was born Mary Brockert in Santa Monica, California, one of six children in a music-loving family with Portuguese, Italian, Irish and Native American roots. She was raised in the Los Angeles suburb of Oakwood, a predominantly African American neighbourhood. As Tina Marie Brockert, she entered show business with an acting role, in 1964, in the television sitcom The Beverly Hillbillies. By the time she was a teenager she had sung at the wedding of the son of the comedy actor Jerry Lewis and was performing with her brother's soul band.

At the age of 20, Teena Marie auditioned for Motown Records, which had moved its centre of operations from Detroit to Los Angeles. Gordy, Motown's owner, signed her to a recording contract, but it was three years before he found the right setting for his young white singer. The catalyst was the guitarist, producer and singer Rick James, who told an interviewer that he had been walking around the Motown building when, "I heard this girl singing her ass off. I walked in and here's this ? white girl. I said, 'Wow you're really great. Are you on Motown?'"

James had been planning to record an album of his songs with Diana Ross, but now decided to work with Marie instead. He became her mentor, teaching her all he knew about playing and singing. The result of their collaboration was Marie's 1979 debut album, Wild and Peaceful, which included I'm a Sucker for Your Love, a duet between James and Marie, which reached the Top 10 of the R&B chart in the US. Perhaps intentionally, the cover of the album did not feature a photograph of the singer, whom most DJs assumed must be African American.

Marie and James recorded another duet together, Fire and Desire, which appeared on James's album Street Songs (1981). Marie's second Motown album, Lady T (a nickname she had acquired at the label), was produced by Richard Rudolph, the widower of the singer Minnie Riperton. The album contained the Rudolph composition Behind the Groove, Marie's biggest British hit, which reached No 6 in 1980. This time, the album sleeve included a photograph of the singer. Marie took full control of her next two albums, Irons in the Fire and It Must Be Magic. She composed, arranged and produced every track on the albums, including I Need Your Lovin' (on the former) and Square Biz (on the latter), in which she rapped a list of her influences, among them Bach, Shakespeare, Sarah Vaughan, Nikki Giovanni and Maya Angelou.

In 1982, Gordy rejected Marie's newest recordings and refused to release them. The singer triumphed in an ensuing courtroom battle when a judge ruled that Motown could not keep an artist under contract without issuing new recordings by her. She later reflected that "every good artist needs a lawsuit". The "Brockert initiative" was used as a legal precedent by other musicians to secure release from their contracts.

Leaving Motown, Marie then signed with Epic, for whom she made five albums during the 1980s. The most successful of these was Starchild (1984), with its Top 10 US pop hit Lovergirl. Ooo La La La, from the 1988 album Naked to the World, was her only No 1 hit in the R&B charts. During the decade, several of Marie's songs were used on the soundtracks of hit movies, notably Lead Me On (Top Gun) and 14k (The Goonies).

During the 1990s, Marie was in semi-retirement, concentrating on bringing up her daughter, Alia Rose. She released one album, Passion Play, on her own label and continued to perform in nightclubs. However, her earlier work remained in the spotlight through new versions of her hits by younger singers. Samples of her recordings were also used by hip-hop vocalists and groups including the Fugees. Marie then signed a contract with the hip-hop label Cash Money Records, which issued her bestselling albums La Doa (2004) and Sapphire (2006). I'm Still in Love, from La Doa, was nominated for a Grammy award for best female R&B vocal performance in 2005. Her former Motown colleague Smokey Robinson sang on two tracks included on Sapphire.

Her final album was Congo Square (2009), whose songs were tributes to her idols, from James to the civil rights leader Coretta Scott King. During the past year, Marie had kept up a busy schedule of performances, including appearances at the Las Vegas Hilton, where she was due to play next year.

She is survived by her daughter.

Radiohead for Haiti charity DVD now available on BitTorrent and YouTube as donationware

Radiohead, a British band that made waves by offering its latest studio album for free or "pay what you want", has just endorsed a community-made DVD of its Haiti earthquake charity concert from January 2010. The DVD is downloadable for free via BitTorrent, and you are strongly encouraged to donate as much as you can to Oxfam's Haiti Earthquake and Recovery Fund.

Creation of the video was a labor of love; video footage from 14 cameras has been used, and you can choose from four different audio tracks, all recorded by different people. Three Radiohead fans, inez, formengr and andrea, have spent the last year collecting the various sources and compiling them into the definitive video of the concert, and boy have they done a good job.

For more details, check inez's blog (but be warned, there is liberal use of fuchsia and aqua), and if you don't fancy an 8GB download, a full-resolution version is also available to watch on YouTube (watch it after the break). If you like it, don't forget to donate!

Angry Birds for Symbian gets two new birds and two new worlds

Angry Birds for SymbianAngry Birds for Nokia's Symbian smartphones has been updated to version 1.4.2 (the previous one being 1.2.1, for those keeping track). This is the 'normal' version of the game, not the holiday-themed Angry Birds Seasons, mind.

The update brings two new worlds, one golden egg world, and two new birds: Boomerang and the Steroid Bird. There's also a new splash screen, and the main dashboard theme changes based on the previous world.

The new version hasn't reached Nokia's Ovi Store yet, but you can update to it using the Update feature that shows up in the bottom right corner of the main dashboard inside your existing Angry Birds install. This will download a file to your device, which you should then run, as it will install the update.

Alternatively, you can grab the update file from SymbianWorld, and run it once you've downloaded it onto your smartphone.
