Blur may release new album ? in six years

Guitarist Graham Coxon says Blur are recording new material, but don't expect it to see the light of day any time soon

Blur are recording new music, and have been for months. Despite hints and promises, the reunited band have only released one new song in seven years, but guitarist Graham Coxon has revealed that "every now and then" Blur get together, "switch a tape recorder on", and, oh, record music of every fan's dreams.

Earlier this month, Coxon dropped the most casual of bombshells on his Twitter feed. "Now off to see the Blur boys and have coffee and maybe switch a tape recorder on," he said, before deleting the post. "We are having a meet-up, might get a guitar out." Two weeks later, Coxon has clarified the nature of the meet-up: no, Blur were not recording a new series of 7ins. They were jus having fun. And recording tunes. Like they do. In private. To the teeth-gnashing frustration of millions.

"Every now and then we like to meet up and record a few things," Coxon told NME yesterday. "Maybe turning the tape recorder on and jamming around a few ideas ... I suppose it might turn into an LP in six years or something ... We just do stuff when we feel like it."

Yes, Blur fans, "six years". Coxon may have been exaggerating. Then again, he may not. He is currently working on two solo albums, plus a single with Paloma Faith and Bill Ryder-Jones, formerly of the Coral. And even if Gorillaz are winding down, Damon Albarn is not exactly twiddling his thumbs. Someone needs to give this lot a deadline.
