Emma's Imagination: Stand Still ? review

(Polydor/Future)

In just four months, Emma Gillespie has gone from busking in Glasgow to having an album released on a major label. The turnaround is due to her appearance on Sky1 talent show Must Be the Music, which she won in September. It's understandable that the 27-year-old's management wanted her to capitalise on victory, but the result, a 10-track album containing two covers, inevitably feels rushed, despite help from KT Tunstall producer Martin Terefe. Gillespie has an agile voice and a winning presence, but her songwriting, which tends towards the whimsical, needs time to develop.
