Robert Pattinson 'wants to play' Jeff Buckley

Reports say Twilight star is keen to portray musician who died by drowning aged 30

The Twilight actor Robert Pattinson wants to play the late singer Jeff Buckley, it has been reported.

The Daily Express says Pattinson is keen to play his hero in a forthcoming biopic of the musician, who drowned aged 30 in 1997.

A source told the newspaper: "Rob is obsessed with this project and is doing everything he can to land the part. He has already told his business team this is his passion and they agree it could be the film that makes him a legitimate Oscar contender."

Michelle Sy, who is said to be producing the film, said: "I've met actors who are keen on the part and Robert was one."

Mary Guibert, 62, the dead singer's mother, said: "Robert is a fine young actor. I'm flattered he's been linked to this project. When the time comes we'll give everybody an opportunity to be seen and heard."

Pattinson has written songs which have been featured on the soundtrack albums for the Twilight films. Sy said: "The actor must be able to play music and sing, or at least make it believable he can do that. Until we start auditions there's no way we know who's best for the part."

Guibert said in a May 2009 interview for the Australian Courier Mail newspaper that Pattinson, Jared Leto, James Franco and James Marsden were interested in playing Buckley.
