Paul McCartney hints at Olympics performance with Ringo

McCartney suggests remaining Beatles could reunite for performance at opening ceremony of London 2012 Olympics

Will the remaining Beatles reunite for the Olympics? Paul McCartney has spurred Fab Two speculation, saying London 2012 organisers "are planning [Beatles] sort of music". After nodding confirmation of his appearance at next summer's opening ceremonies, McCartney joked: "I met the guy who knows the guy who's going to ask somebody about it soon."

"I hear there's a rumour that I might be involved," McCartney told Access Hollywood. "I've not actually heard anything [specific] about it yet ... but they are now planning the music." While this may be vague, it's an improvement on the last time McCartney was asked about the Olympics: in June, the former Beatle told Absolute Radio that although he would love to perform, he had not been approached by organisers. "They don't ask me to do everything," he said.

According to the Sun, director Danny Boyle and the rest of the Olympics organisers are "desperate" for McCartney to be involved in the opening ceremonies. They want Ringo too, and may even complete the band with George Harrison and John Lennon's children. "Macca was just being coy about the details," the Sun's "insider" alleged.

This stems from a proposal by Sir Steve Redgrave, the London 2012 sports legacy champion, who argued the opening ceremony should feature a supergroup of British rock icons. "If Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo came together with great bands such as the Rolling Stones and the Sex Pistols it would be fantastic," he told the People. "We have to show the world what we are good at."

Coldplay and the Spice Girls are among acts rumoured to feature in the 27 July 2012 gala. Although it has been reported that Girls Aloud could mark their 10-year anniversary by reuniting for the Olympics, Kimberley Walsh recently dismissed the suggestion. "The five of us definitely have plans to do something to mark the anniversary ... but I'm not sure the Olympics is the place for that," she told OK! magazine. "I think, for the fans, we'd like to perhaps do something on our own."
