Jay-Z begins work on new album

Rapper says record inspired by forthcoming Kanye West collaboration is experimental but 'not weird'

Jay-Z has begun work on his next solo album, the follow-up to his forthcoming collaboration with Kanye West. Although the rapper is only two songs into what will be his 11th studio album, "I know exactly the tone and the whole feel," he promised. "It's different. It's not weird."

Jay-Z said he had been inspired by his team-up with West, the long-anticipated Watch the Throne. Although rumoured to come out last week, there's still no sign of it ? or even a release date. But Jay-Z did host a listening party in New York on Thursday, inviting journalists and fans to listen to 11 tracks that may or may not appear on Watch the Throne. They included two songs featuring Odd Future's Frank Ocean, and one with Jay-Z's wife, Beyonc. What was ostensibly the album's lead single, H.A.M, may not actually appear on the record. "It's just so big and so much, you don't want that shit screaming in your house," Jay-Z said.

Regardless of when Watch the Throne will appear, the collaboration has spurred Jay-Z's new solo work. "I think when you experience creativity, you should get it out as much as possible," he said. "I never had two songs this early, before my current project came out. They are really fucking good. I can tell you that."

Jay-Z's most recent album was 2009's The Blueprint 3, which reached No 4 in the UK. At the time of its release, Jay-Z claimed his next LP would be his "most experimental [ever]". "My next album, which I'm working on now ... it's not gonna be a No 1 album," he said, days after attending a Grizzly Bear concert in Brooklyn.

Jay-Z has sold more than 50m albums worldwide.
