Rival Sons: Pressure & Time ? review

(Earache)

The bijou Nottingham independent label Earache is most often home to death metal bands called things like Ignominious Incarceration. So it comes as a surprise to find among its roster a band of Californian vegans playing retro blues rock. Rival Sons are causing a minor stir in "classic" rock circles due to their heartfelt fusions of Led Zeppelin, Free and latter-day sources such as Guns N' Roses or the Black Crowes. The pretentious Storm Thorgerson cover art that graces their second album is probably not hurting either. The overall feel here is very beholden, but blues romps such as "Young Love" and the title track swing a lot harder than they have any right to.
