Alfred Gaynor: Serial Killer in Massachusetts Confesses to More Slayings

Alfred Gaynor (pictured) may be the most vile murderer you've never heard of.

But the days of anonymity for the convicted serial killer from western Massachusetts may be coming to an end as details of the latest twist in his murderous tale filter out from Springfield and disgust the rest of the nation.

Gaynor, 41, is already serving life sentences for the rapes and murders of four women, but now, Gaynor says he raped and killed another woman and left her infant daughter to starve to death with the body in 1996.

The child, 22-month-old Destiny Smith, died of starvation and dehydration while lying next to the body of her mother, Amy L. Smith, 20.

The murders shook the city of Springfield, especially black parts of the city where the murders took place.

So now it seems that an innocent man may have been convicted in those deaths.

Gaynor's nephew, Paul L. Fickling, who happened to be the father of Destiny, was convicted of the Smith murders.

Gaynor's admission to the murder came as a part of a court filing by Fickling's attorney to free his client.

Gaynor said he was high on beer and crack cocaine when he visited Smith's apartment to rob her.

Gaynor's former lawyer, Linda Thompson, said Gaynor did indeed tell her of his involvement in the Smith murders, but she held her tongue due to attorney-client privacy; Gaynor has released Thompson from her obligation to keep their conversations private.

Thompson said in a published report, "Mr. Fickling deserves to be released."

Based on what's been released about the case, I wouldn't rush to free anyone just yet.

The jury in the Fickling trial convicted him because there was evidence pointing to him as the murderer. There are also plenty of questions as to why Gaynor would have sat in silence as he watched his nephew get convicted in the heinous murders.

I hope authorities conduct a thorough investigation in to what exactly happened the night Amy Smith and her baby were killed.
