Low: C'mon ? review

(Sub Pop)

Every so often, this exquisite Minnesotan band get discovered. In 2000, there was a Gap ad; recently, Robert Plant covered them on his Band Of Joy album. Throughout it all, Low keep making taut, intense albums that occasionally vary their trademark sepulchral vibe with volume (2005's The Great Destroyer) or electronics (2007's Drums and Guns). This ninth one is a particular keeper. In great part it's thanks to tracks such as "$20", a doom-laden duet sung by Low's core husband-and-wife pair, a heroic partnership that has survived children, nervous breakdowns (Alan Sparhawk once thought he was the Antichrist) and the wider world's indifference.
