Media Converter lets you quickly convert any video file into a suitable format for your iPod or for a DVD, while also letting you perform tasks such as ripping the audio from a movie. All it takes is a little drag-and-drop. You just select the format you want to convert to, then drag-and-drop the source file(s) onto Media Converter's sleek minimalist interface. It will automatically start converting, and then alert you once it's done.
Almost any input file format and extension you can think of is supported. You can fine tune the presets that show up underneath the drag-and-drop zone by going to the Preferences, where you can also create your own preset combinations of codecs and file formats. These can even be subsequently shared with the world if you send them to the developer, or you can just keep it simple and only use the included presets, which cover most basic conversion needs. A list of the built-in presets as well as a few extra ones you can use is available on a dedicated page at the developer's site.
Media Converter can do batch operations, and it has some neat tricks up its sleeve such as automatic creation of letterbox bars to keep the aspect ratio from being altered, as well as switching between 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios when needed.
Media Converter is free and open source and it works on any Mac running OS X 10.4.11 or newer.
