Opening of Bono's Spider-Man musical tangled in web of changes

Fourth time show featuring music written by U2 frontman and guitarist the Edge has been delayed

The opening of rocker Bono's $65m (41.8m) Spider-Man musical was officially delayed again today, with the show's creators due to change portions of the production before its new opening date on 7 February.

It is the fourth time the show, which features music written by Bono and guitarist the Edge, has been delayed after initial setbacks with finances and, more recently, performers suffering injuries as well technical difficulties during previews. Its previous debut date was 11 January.

"Due to some unforeseeable setbacks, most notably the injury of a principal cast member, it has become clear that we need to give the team more time to fully execute their vision," the main producer, Michael Cohl, said in a statement.

"I have no intention of cutting a single corner in getting to the finish line."

Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, Broadway's most expensive-ever show, caught audiences by surprise in its first preview performance several weeks ago when its hi-tech flying sequences became stuck, leaving stars helplessly suspended in mid-air.

A spokesman for the show said Bono and the Edge were due to return to New York early in January from their current world tour, as originally planned, but he could not confirm reports that the pair were rewriting the end of the show, which is directed and co-written by Julie Taymor.

Cohl said in the statement: "The creative team is implementing truly exciting changes throughout the preview process."
